Northern Writers is a non-profit organisation, began by Yusuf Martin, with the concept of bringing an understanding of writing, arts and culture, entirely free, to areas north of Kuala Lumpur. It is an understanding that those writers who participate in Northern Writers do so free of charge, as do the organisers and supporters. Entrance is free to all who enjoy the arts.

Northern Writers intends to open itself up to the general public, and not be in the slightest elitist. There is opportunity for all to learn about different aspects of writing, editing, publishing as well as listen to practised writers read from their works – national and international. At times artists and cartoonists will be invited to talk about art and/or their artworks. Sometimes the format will be audience/reader, and at other times discussion and Q&A will seem more appropriate but, whatever the format, the dual intention is to entertain and promote literacy in the broadest possible sense.

‘Tapestry 2011’

Inspired by the animal kingdom

The Faculty of Dance of Akademi Seni Budaya dan Warisan Kebangsaan announces its last production this year – “Tapestry…inspired by the animal kingdom”. This is a continuation of the highly successful traditional dance series and winner of Boh Cameronian Award Audience Choice Award for Best Dance Production 2006. This year, ASWARA has chosen to showcase traditional folk and classical dance repertoire that takes its inspiration from the animal kingdom. The title of show refers to the colourful collage of dance cultures that make Malaysia what it is – and this time around, to look at how many traditional dances have taken their inspiration from the animal kingdom! From Johor, or Sarawak to Kelantan, it is fascinating to note that a common source of ideas for choreographers is nature and the animal kingdom and we wanted to highlight this fact – which is a little quirky, keeping the idea that folk traditions can be fun too! One of the main aims of ASWARA is to ensure the preservation of traditions and this is why Tapestry is an important annual production since it is danced by about 60 dancers under the age of 25!

It was another blazingly hot Saturday in June. Muhammad Haji Salleh – a Malaysian poet laureate walked to the rostrum and launched Northern Writers at Garden Villa, 5 Jalan Raja Dr Nazrin Shah, Ipoh, 4^th June 2011. ‘Girls’ from The Ipoh book Club supported the event by bringing finger food, water and a typical Ipoh glamour while writer and academic Paul GnanaSelvan lent his moral and physical support, as did the members of The Kinta Heritage Group. Kamal Sabran, Nur Hanim Mohamed Khairuddin and The Space Gambus Experiment provided freshly innovative music especially for the occasion.

Yusuf Martin brought the initiative of writers reading to appreciative audiences - this time out of Kuala Lumpur and into the northern state of Perak. Northern Writers continues a trend once set by Ipoh girl Bernice Chauly (poet, actress, writer) back in 2005, when she began ‘Readings’ by writers in Bangsar, Kuala Lumpur. Sharon Bakar continued when Bernice had to take a step backwards due to illness in her family. When she returned, Bernice began another set of readings, this time at the No Black Tie club, again in Kuala Lumpur.

In the first of an on-going monthly series, housed in a 100 year old building - lent for the events by Kinta Heritage and the Eu Foundation, Yusuf enticed Perak born Professor Dr Muhammad Haji Salleh to deliver some of his renowned poems including The Forest’s Last Day- found in his collection Rowing Down Two Rivers. Ipoh boy, radio and TV broadcaster/actor - Patrick Teoh regaled a most attentive audience with snippets from his latest book – Teology, Bernice Chauly read from a forthcoming work and Graham McEune had his audience in fits of laughter reading from his book - Up Country – largely set in Perak.

That was but the beginning. Each month Northern Writers presents four different writers, from different aspects of writing and reading – poets, novelists, short story writers, writers about writing, columnists, play and screenwriters etc, on the first Saturday of every month, in Garden Villa, Ipoh.

Local, international, citizen and expatriate writers, readers and audiences are all most welcome in the stunningly beautiful black and white antique wooden villa – the only stipulation is that you take off your shoes, and don’t smoke in the building.

Shady trees add ambience to the grounds which are set back from the main road, as the Anglo-Malaysian building adds atmosphere to the presented events. In modernity, the Garden Villa building has been intended, by the Eu family, for the purpose of promoting arts and culture, and a more perfect fit could not be imagined than Garden Villa - and the Northern Writers’ events.

I’m writing this to ask for your support for a fundraising symphony concert for our beloved and well-respected conductor, violinist, educator, and mentor, Mr. Brian Tan, a 42 year-old who has been diagnosed with pancreatic cancer since October 2009. This charity concert, A Concert For Brian, will feature professional musicians, composers, teachers, and music students, gathering together to raise fund for Brian's children’s education.

Brian Tan, a familiar name in the Malaysian music scene, has influenced thousands of students, teachers, and audiences both in Malaysia and abroad. He is an icon and role model for many of us. Not only has his gift and musicianship influenced the local music circle, his teaching philosophy, as well as his positive and driven personality have also inspired people of all ages, including his students, their parents, other music teachers, his fellow musicians, and audiences.

Brian has been fighting his cancer since its inception. Pancreatic cancer is a fatal cancer and victims normally would last 6 to 9 months. However, Brian’s will of steel and positive attitude has helped him to survive for 2 miraculous years. Nevertheless, on August 15th, the cancer suddenly attacked his other organs and his health condition has since deteriorated greatly.

We often hear the saying "One life can change many others" and all of us who know Brian have seen this from him. And we have every intention to do what we can in order to continue his legacy. I’m here seeking your support, in whichever way, to help make the fundraising concert a success. Please note that all participation in this concert is ABSOLUTELY voluntary and out of free will. The Malaysian Philharmonic Orchestra and Dewan Filharmonik PETRONAS 11/12 Season kicked off with our Gala concert last Saturday, featuring Malaysian pianists Bobby Chen, Tengku Ahmad Irfan and Foo Mei Yi. Singer-songwriter du jour Yuna also brought the house down in two full-house concerts – a first for our DFP Spotlight series.

Encouraging and Developing a Greater Knowledge and Understanding of the Arts in the State of Perak

Shiny Black Gold

Drama unfolds on 20-22 May 2011 with the staging of PSPA’s in-house musical production, Shiny Black Gold. The stage production is one of the highlights of Perak Performing Arts Festival 2011 organised by PSPA. The play chronicles the lives of the Chinese during the glorious days of tin mining in Perak, exploring their many struggles and sacrifices. In the early 1900s, the Hakka people left their homeland in China to seek their fortune in Malaya, enticed by the ‘shiny black gold’ in the new land. In the face of such promise, they had to grapple with hardship, vengeance and retribution.

Hope, courage and passion form the essence of Shiny Black Gold and revolve around the conflict faced by the characters who have to find the courage to rise above the uncertainties and triumph in the face of adversity. At the heart of the play too is the dilemma of finding a balance between the traditions accustomed to and the new ways of life in the Promised Land.

The story centres around a young man, Lee Cheong, who left his wife and mother to travel to Malaya to seek his fortune. His new life was not as he had envisioned and he had to contend with the wrath of Madam Wong who blamed him for her husband’s death and the unscrupulous Foong Chai, the youngest of four brothers called the Heavenly Dragons, who was unashamedly involved in criminal activities. In the midst of all this a young maiden called Ying Mei fell in love with Lee Cheong, much to the chagrin of Foong Chai who was secretly in love with the girl.

The play also touches on the suffering and ordeal of the miners at the hands of Japanese who showed no mercy to the men and women. It was a trying time for the people who had to work hard for their livelihood whilst acceding to the demands of their tormenters. Some of them were slaves who had to work a whole life time to repay their debts or the debts of their family.

Written, produced and directed by Datin Rosalina Ooi-Thong, the play features original songs like ‘Find me Shiny Black Gold’ and ‘Life is great’, among others. The soundtrack is by music composer Christopher Tse while Marianne Poh is the choral mistress. Timothy Chee is the costume designer and Daimler Tan is in charge of visual production. The cast of forty-five include Xavier Fong, an up-and-coming film actor, in the lead role, well known drama teacher Sylvia Wong, who is also the play’s co-director, Shu Wern Sze, Timothy Ho, Kevinder Singh and Gerald Goh.

Shiny Black Gold will be staged at Taman Budaya, Ipoh from 20-22 May. There will be one show on Friday, 20 May 2011 at 8 p.m., and two shows on Saturday 21 May and Sunday, 22 May, at 4 p.m. and 8 p.m.

Shakespeare’s Plays Make a Comeback in Ipoh

Royal intrigue, the brandishing of knives and guns, sixteenth century costumes and a touch of Bollywood marked the return of Shakespeare’s plays to the Ipoh stage on 25 March at the ACS school auditorium. Students from SMK Convent, Methodist Girls School (MGS) and the Ipoh International School enacted selected scenes from three plays, King Lear, Twelfth Night and Julius Caesar. They had different takes on Shakespeare and their efforts on stage proved they had skill and poise beyond their years.

The stage performance is one of the many events in the Perak Performing Arts Festival (PPAF) being organised by the Perak Society of Performing Arts (PSPA). It is a community outreach programme involving selected schools in Ipoh. This pilot project, titled Exploring Shakespeare, aims to lead students into an exploration of the works of the literary genius, William Shakespeare. The programme is the brainchild of Dato’ Richard Small and Chin Yoong Kim, drama aficionados and distinguished academicians in Ipoh literary circles, who were also the advisors and mentors. In his opening speech, Dato’ Richard highlighted the importance of diction, enunciation and stagecraft in stage performances, and commended the students who were able to put up a show with less than one month of preparation.

SMK Convent put up a commendable performance of Twelfth Night. With an all-girls cast, the students appeared comfortable taking on male and female roles. The scenes focused on the arrogant steward to the countess Olivia, Malvolio, who was convinced that his lady had designs on him and wished to marry him. Not realising he had been set up by the servants of the house, he acted out his delusions, showing a pomposity that was contemptible yet amusing. The students played their roles eloquently, dramatising the trickery and deception in the play to the delight of the audience.

Yong Sook Yan was in her element as Malvolio and rightly deserved the Best Actor award for her succinct portrayal of the deluded steward.

King Lear came alive with the MGS students giving their all in the tragedy. The play is about a foolish king who gave away his kingdom to his two older daughters, only to realise his folly at the end when it was too late. He had disinherited his youngest daughter, Cordelia, because she fell short when professing her love for him. However the end saw him dying of grief when he realised the truth. Another all-girls cast, the students mesmerised the audience with their quite flawless acting and display of subtle nuances of emotion, showing a maturity of performance that kept the audience captivated. Alia Amira Zuhdi, the protaganist, won the Best Actor award for her brilliant portrayal of King Lear in this play.

The Ipoh International School went with an unusual adaption of Julius Caesar.

Its international cast showcased a Bollywood-Malaysia-Shakespeare-styled stage production which went down very well with the audience. With an extraordinary combination of comedy, history, treachery, betrayal and murder, the performance was both humorous and sombre. The performers proved they were truly inventive and creative and kept the audience entertained throughout. Balakarthik a/l Balaravi was the best actor in this play.

His portrayal of Julius Caesar was a depiction of confidence, finesse and passion.

The judges for the event were Neil Sutherland and Carol Armour from Kolej Yayasan UEM who quite impressed with the students’ acting abilities and encouraged them to further explore this genre of the arts.

The PSPA President, Datin Rosalina Ooi-Thong, herself an admirer of Shakespeare, expresses hope that this event will lead to a revival of stage productions of Shakespeare’s many great plays in Ipoh.

Encouraging and Developing a Greater Knowledge and Understanding of the Arts in the State of Perak

Perak residents are in for exciting times come March 2011 when the Perak Performing Arts Festival (PPAF) is brought to their doorstep in grand fashion. Organised by the Perak Society of Performing Arts (PSPA), the Festival will see the performing arts coming to the forefront, paying tribute to the arts and celebrating its significance in the lives of those who have been impacted by it. With performances lined up right into September 2011, Perak audiences are sure to be enthralled and captivated by performers of diverse talents who will participate in the different genres of music, song, dance and drama during the Festival.

John Fitzgerald Kennedy (1917-1963) once said "The life of the arts, far from being an interruption, a distraction, in the life of a nation, is very close to the centre of a nation's purpose - and is a test of the quality of a nation's civilization." Extolling the virtues and intrinsic worth of the arts in the belief that it effectively enhances our quality of life and gives it purpose and direction, Kennedy believed that we are a better civilisation because of it.

The same belief is held by PSPA, a non-profit organisation with volunteer members, whose aim is to encourage and develop a greater knowledge and understanding of the arts in the state of Perak. Its President, Datin Rosalina Ooi-Thong, believes that the performing arts is an integral and essential part of the human experience, and is a measure of a progressive society. Engagement with the arts adds value to our lives, creating in us a sensitivity that only comes with greater understanding of the human condition.

As such the society seeks to become an effective catalyst for the enrichment, growth and practice of the performing arts within the state of Perak. This is done by increasing its accessibility to the public, improving its standards and execution and collaborating with government departments and other arts groups to create an artistically vibrant society in Perak.

The Performing Arts Festival is an endeavour to make the aspirations of PSPA become reality. Datin Rosalina is confident that the Festival will help fill the void in the Perak arts scene by engaging with talents from all walks of life and age groups, harnessing and tapping existing talents, fostering creative expression, and at the same time providing exposure to students who have an inherent interest and wish to pursue a career in the performing arts.

The Perak Performing Arts Festival event has received the blessings of the Perak Menteri Besar, Y.A.B. Dato’ Seri Dr. Zambry bin Abd. Kadir, who also serves as its Patron. PSPA is also privileged to have DYMM Paduka Seri Sultan Azlan Muhibbudin Shah, Sultan Yang Di-Pertuan dan Raja Pemerintah Negeri Perak as the Royal Patron for the Festival. As icing on the cake, Ipoh-born international actress Dato Michelle Yeoh has graciously agreed to be the Performing Arts Icon.

The Festival kicks off with a community outreach programme involving four selected school in Ipoh, namely MGS, St Michael’s, ACS and Main Convent. This pilot project, aptly titled Exploring Shakespeare, aims to lead students into an exploration of the works of Shakespeare, a literary genius whose plays have been immortalised in the many stage performances around the world.

The students will be staging selected acts from Macbeth, King Lear, Twelfth Night and Julius Ceasar. The programme which stretches from early March to end-March, is the brainchild of Dato’ Richard Small and Chin Yoong Kim, drama aficionados and distinguished academicians in Ipoh literary circles. The stage performance will be on 25 March at the ACS Hall. Admission to this event is free.

Simultaneously, Reaching Out Through Art by Ipoh-born architect and author Theresa Lim, will be held from 11-12 March. With a ‘Charity Dinner Talk & Art Exhibition’ held on 11 March and a ‘Storytelling & Painting’ session on 12 March, this event aims to raise funds for the Perak Autistic Society.

Theresa Lim who happens to be the first woman architect in Perak, developed a keen interest in art from a very young age. She is also well-known for the two books she published on her early years in Ipoh. As a gesture of goodwill, Theresa is donating fifty of her art pieces to Perak.

Meanwhile, expect a scintillating performance on 19 March at 7.15pm during Ipoh Oscar Night.

Broadway entertainment, performances from a Chinese Kung Fu group and vocal performances of evergreen classic Chinese songs are the high points of the evening which aims to raise funds for two charities, The New Horizon Society and Pertubuhan Jagaan Kanak-Kanak Cacat Setia in Silibin, Ipoh.

A play that holds special and personal meaning for Perakians is one of the main highlights of the Festival. PSPA’s own in-house musical production Shiny Black Gold will be from 20-22 May.

With the script written by Datin Rosalina herself and music by Christopher Tse, the musical gives an insight into the lives of people during the glorious days of tin mining in Perak. Spanning the Japanese Occupation, Communist Insurgence and the period just after the war, the play explores the lives of the Chinese who migrated to Malaysia to work in the mines. Expect a riveting performance from a group of talented actors and actresses.

Perak Choral Festival to be held from 18-20 June, celebrates the vocal prowess of Perak’s talented choirs and the German Youth Choir ‘Heidelberger Jugendchor’.

There will also be guest performances from KL Children’s Choir, MIA Ladies Chorus and Caipifruta. On top of that, a choral training workshop will be conducted by vocal expert Susanna Saw on 18 June.

In the following month, from 1-2 July, Perak Dance Festival takes centre stage, featuring dance troupes of various nationalities, cultures and ethnic groups who will showcase their talent in various genres over two days.

The Dance Festival will feature two events – Dance Festival and Dance Gala. Dance Festival, on 2 July from 10am-5pm, will see performances from different dance schools and centres in Perak whilst Dance Gala on 1&2 July at 8pm, includes performances by special guest artistes from Singapore Dance Theatre, ASWARA, winners of the Dance Society of Malaysia competition, professional dancers from Hong Kong and Latin dance champions.

Also in the month of July will be Perak’s very own Kinta Valley Wind Orchestra, under the direction of Eugene Pook who promises a mesmerising performance on 31 July.

Fresh from the success of the KVWO’s debut in Ipoh last year, Eugene is once again set to earn rave reviews with his musical prowess at this Festival. KVWO’s specially arranged performance for the Festival titled ‘Around the world in 80 minutes’ will feature Eugene’s wide musical repertoire.

PSPA’s International Ensemble 2011 intends to dazzle audiences on 21 August.

Its concert titled ‘Butterfly Lovers & Love Songs’, will see Perakians enjoying instrumental and vocal performances by musicians from South East Asia, Eastern Europe and America. Making up the Ensemble will be a conductor, a vocalist and ten musicians.

What better way to end the Festival than with a rousing, joyous parade of bands marching together at a momentous occasion. Held in conjunction with Malaysia Day on 16 September, Perak Top Marching Bands which include school bands and a military band will bring the Festival to a close at the Ipoh Padang.

About the Concert

The Perak Society of Performing Arts (“PSPA”) choir known as the PSPA Singers will be engaged in a number of charity performances in Ipoh for this year end season titled “A Message of Love and Inspiration”. The choir will be singing well known sacred songs and also well loved secular numbers under the direction of their musical director, Mr Chin Yoong Kim.

The PSPA Singers, comprising some thirty highly motivated female and male volunteers, had their first performance on 25 November 2010 at Hospital Fatimah with a full house. Coming at the heels of their first successful performance recently, the Singers will be staging a second charity performance in association with YMCA Ipoh.

Admission is free. However, any donations collected at this second performance will go to the Orang Asli Community. Seats are limited.

A MUSICAL DELIGHT

On 28 September 2010, Ipohites received a double dose of delightful music in the form of critically-acclaimed musicians, Matthew McAllister and Aisling Agnew who performed before an appreciative audience at Taman Budaya. The concert, titled A Musical Delight, was a collaborative effort of PSPA and Classical Music Society Selangor/Kuala Lumpur. Prior to the concert the Matthew and Aisling conducted guitar and flute workshops for music lovers in Ipoh.

Matthew, a classical guitarist from Scotland and Aisling a flautist from Ireland performed as a duo, presenting ten pieces of famous compositions from world renowned musicians which included Johann Sebastian Bach’s (1685 – 1750) Sonata in E minor.

From the opening piece, Hamnataing (composed by Chris Stout, b. 1976) until the end, the duo had the audience mesmerized with their obvious mastery of their musical genres. There was literally pin-drop silence in the concert hall during their performances. The concert ended with loud applause from the appreciative audience.

Aisling and Matthew have given many high profile concerts over the years. They have performed in Boston, Pennsylvannia and Virginia in North America. They have also performed at the Barockmuseum in Salzburg, twice in the last year, giving concerts of contemporary music. Recent activities include a concert tour of Peru and Costa Rica where they also conducted masterclasses.

EUGENE IN CONCERT

In early August this year, Eugene Pook (the Music Director of Kinta Valley Wind Orchestra) went on a Malaysian concert tour in Penang, Ipoh and Petaling Jaya. The concert features Eugene himself on the clarinet, performing together with a guest musician from America, Dr Jeremy Samolesky, on the piano. A decision was made at the last minute to stage a small performance in Ipoh on Friday, 6 August 2010. This event was hosted by Ms. Daphne Chin, the Director of Creative Music Academy in Ipoh Garden East.

The concert was attended by about 100 people from all walks of life and it was a full house despite the venue being small. The VIPs that attended were the family members of Mr. Eugene Pook and Dato’ Dr Madhuri Majumder, a lifelong advocate of the performing arts.

The evening started well with combined pieces played by Eugene Pook and Jeremy Samolesky, featuring compositions from Debussy, Schumann, Paul Reade’s and a ‘Concerto’ by an American Jazz composer Aaron Copland. Eugene gave a polished performance on the clarinet and equally so was Jeremy on the piano. The piece from Paul Reade ‘Victorian Kitchen Garden Suite’ was especially delightful. This enchanting suite was selected specially to be performed on the clarinet and piano. Eugene and Jeremy were the perfect duo and were clearly two Maestros at work. Well done!

Before the end of the concert, guest performer Dr. Jeremy Samolesky introduced his solo piece, engaging the audience with a lecture recital of the musical composition from Franz Liszt - St Francis: Walking on the Water. His mastery of the piece was evident when he played this most powerful composition to perfection, earning him a big round of applause from the audience who clearly showed their appreciation for a magnificent performance.

The evening ended well with an encore, Flights of the Bumble Bees, played by both Eugene on the clarinet and Jeremy as the accompanying pianist. The final performance was a tribute to how music in its smallest measure can be achieved with love.

As lovers of music, we look forward to the next recital!

Programme

The programme for the 80 members orchestra includes classical music by Mozart, Dvorak and Verdi as well as selections from popular musicals such as “Cats” and “Phantom of the Opera”. There will also be Yao tribal music and traditional Malay folksongs with orchestral arrangements. David Ngim (tenor) and Serene Yoon (soprano) will sing favourites from operas by Verdi.

Conductor

The conductor of the orchestra, Mr Woon Wen Kin, is the most experienced symphony orchestra conductor in Malaysia. He founded the Penang Symphony Society in 1981 and serves as the resident conductor and music director.

International Recognition

He has led the orchestra for performances in Singapore, Thailand, Taiwan, Australia, Japan and China. Mr Woon has also performed with orchestras in the US and China, where he was a guest conductor with the Shanghai Symphony Orchestra.

PERAK'S VERY OWN WIND ORCHESTRA

The Kinta Valley Wind Orchestra (KVWO) made its debut in Ipoh on 4 July 2010. Held at the Syuen Hotel before an audience of more than a thousand, the concert delighted both young and old with a wide musical repertoire ranging from pop to jazz to classical, infused in a charming blend of east and west.

The KVWO was made possible by its founder, Datuk K.K. Lim who had a passion for the performing arts and envisioned Perak having a philharmonic orchestra. Bringing in the well-known Eugene Pook as musical director and conductor was a logical step. Included in the orchestra were professional and amateur musicians. The months of putting together an orchestra, preparations and rehearsals paid off when the KVWO took Perak by storm with its outstanding performances.

The concert also showcased the prowess of individual performers like Joost Flach who fascinated all with his oboe recital, Philip Boey who played a haunting melody on his Gu Zheng while Foo Cheong Lin, a saxophonist, was inspiring with his flawless rendition of The way we were. Also featured were two vocalists, the elegant Estee Pook, singing in Chinese and Malay (Bukan cinta biasa and a Teresa Teng medley) and the suave Alan Low who mesmerised the audience with a Chinese number and a smooth delivery of Can’t take my eyes off you.

There was satisfaction all round at the end of the concert. The KVWO concert may be the first of its kind for Perak but it certainly won’t be the last.

REPORT ON THE JUNIOR ASSOCIATE CONFERENCE

“All the world’s a stage, And all the men and women merely players”

These words from Shakespeare’s As You Like It rang true literally for forty young participants who attended a two-day workshop, from 19-20 June 2010, organised by Perak Society of Performing Arts (PSPA) Junior Associate Conference at Taman Budaya, Ipoh. The participants were introduced to the theatre and the world of stage production in a number of workshop sessions with ‘Exploring Stage and Theatre’ as the main theme. These young people whose ages range from 12-18 and were from schools around Ipoh, were given the opportunity to draw on their creativity and inherent talent in order to realise their potential as stage actors and actresses.

On hand to guide them were facilitators with vast experience in the performing arts. Rosalina Ooi, Jeya Jeyaratnam, Chantelle-Shakila Tiagi, Jeffrey Chew, SylviaWong, Jacqueline Thong, Gerald Goh and Xavier Fong, in their respective sessions, took the participants through their paces, demonstrating how action, movement, voice, song etc. were fundamental to acting and could take one to great heights as a stage performer.

The conference, overseen by the president of PSPA, Datin Rosalina and the organising chairperson, Doreen Kam, began with an introduction to the theatre by Datin Rosalina. Immediately after that was a ‘Laughter’ session conducted by Jeya who believed that the ‘feel-good effects of laughter’ would help raise energy levels. Through her activities, she taught the participants to laugh at themselves and shed their inhibitions, thus preparing them for what was to come next. Before the session was over, everyone was psyched up and raring to go.

Jeffrey then carried out a session on ‘Exploring with Song’, highlighting how music and song could be an integral aspect of stage performances. The participants clearly enjoyed this session. Chantelle explored ‘Action’ and got the youngsters to understand the significance of movement and action. Sylvia meanwhile got the participants to exercise their vocal cords, with hilarious results. Xavier had ‘stage tips’ for the soon-to-be stage performers, drawing together aspects of imagination, body language and voice projection and demonstrating how these can be exploited for a successful and memorable stage performance.

The intensive two-day workshop culminated in stage presentations by the different age groups who used dance, voice, song and movement to communicate their perception of what ‘Happiness is...’. With merely a couple of hours of rehearsal, it was the moment of truth for the participants when they proved that they were indeed capable of staging fast-paced, highly-charged and enthralling performances. The internal audience of mainly parents were entertained by the riveting presentations.

It was an exciting 2-days for the participants, as evidenced by the laughter and spontaneity during the workshop sessions. Alexander Joseph (13 years) and his brother Adrian (12 years) felt the workshop was fun and enjoyed the new experiences, while Isabelle Leong (17 years) and her friends from MGS were seen giving their all in the activities. Perhaps the question that could be uppermost in everybody’s mind after the workshop is “To be, or not to be (an actor): that is the question:” (Hamlet).
