MAMAK MEE-AH!

Mamak Mee-Ah! GOES TO PENANG!

Yup, after performing to full houses in KL, Mamak Mee-Ah! will be heading North.

ONE NIGHT ONLY

DATE & TIME 23 July @ 8.30pm

VENUE Wawasan Open University, Jln. Sultan Ahmad Shah (click here for map)

TICKET PRICE RM40 (centre seats) & RM20 (side seats)

Here we go with a second helping of Mamak Mee-Ah!

Created by the same team that was responsible for Broadway Parodies Lah! and the award-winning Broadway Parodies Lagi Lah! Mamak Mee-Ah! The Musical Spoof premiered in April and played to packed houses, eventually selling out.

The concept is simple. Inspired by the Western “Forbidden Broadway” spoof show, the team borrows well-known numbers from Western musicals and spoof the lyrics to give it a Malaysian flavour. It is still a musical in the traditional sense complete with song and dance!

The premise is also simple. A Singaporean lawyer makes a trip to Malaysia and befriends a local mamak, his wife and family. The story plays on one thing that unites all Malaysians - food and our love for food! Some of the songs featured including I Feel Hungry (from West Side’s Story’s I Feel Pretty), I’ll Eat Anything (from Oliver’s I’d Do Anything) as well as the crowd’s absolute favourite No Pork No Pork (from New York, New York ).

Mamak Mee-Ah is a rich rojak of Malaysian life garnished with a big splash of humour and served on a platter of great songs!

BALIK KAMPUNG

BALIK KAMPUNG

The Faculty of Dance ASWARA supported by MyDance Alliance is producing a contemporary dance performance to celebrate the 'Balik Kampung' of 3 of its Diploma graduates. James Kan, Lee Wen Yan and Liu Yong Sean are back for the summer holidays and what better way to let the public glimpse into who they are, what they have learned and possible future directions of these young dancer-choreographers than to present them in a performance. James has completed Year 2 of his modern dance performance program at the Taipei National University of Arts, Taiwan, Wen Yan a Year 2 choreography major while Yong Sean a year 3 performance major, both at Korean National University of the Arts in Seoul. They are students are pursuing their Bachelor of Arts programs on full-scholarship awarded by the foreign universities.

The works are not about "returning home" but a series of solos and group works that are created on themselves as solo artists and the ASWARA Dancers. The ASWARA Dancers are the receipients of the Best Dance Group award at the 8th Boh Cameronian Arts Awards 2010 and are enriching the Malaysian dance scene. Contemporary dance has a much smaller following than popular theatre, and by and large, the audience struggles to "understand" what is being presented onstage. This is one of the main reasons that ASWARA does its best to present performances throughout the year that gives the audience an opportunity to familiarize themselves with contemporary ideas, concepts and styles. It is by watching performances that we can cultivate an interest and appreciation.

Please do take the time to watch the 2 shows as follows:

Date: 4 & 5 August 2010 (Wed. and Thurs.)

Time: 8.30 p.m

Venue: Experimental Theatre, ASWARA Campus - 464 Jalan Tun Ismail, 50480 Kuala Lumpur

Tickets: RM20.00 & RM 10.00 (students/senior citizens/MyDance Alliance Members/TDS Members/KLDA Members)

Workshop Description:
The workshops combines Butoh, physho-physical training methods and Asian shamanistic trance dance. The workshops incorporatesatraining methodologythat aims to develop spontaneity, letting the body find its own individual language in psycho-physical expression.Ultimately the dance becomes the expression of the body as it finds itself and its own movement. This is a process to return to the body to the creative energy that inspires movement. Rather than aspiring to an aesthetic ideal, the dancer attempts to expose elements of life through exploring the most fundamental physical and psychological elements.

About Tony Yap
Born in Malaysia, Yap is an accomplished dancer, director, choreographer and visual artist. Tony was one of the principle performers with the IRAA Theatre (1989 - 1996) and has worked extensively in Australia and overseas including Agamemnon Festival Colline Torinese, Italy, and The Trojan Woman, Vienna International Art Festival. As the founding Artistic director of Mixed Company (now Tony Yap Company) in 1993, he has made a commitment to the exploration and creation of an individual dance theatre language that is informed by psycho-physical research, Asian shamanistic trance dance, Butoh, Voice and Visual design.
