MICHAELIAN MILITARY BAND PERFORM FOR FRIENDSHIP

DRESSED in their signature deep green and black uniforms, the boys of the Michaelian Military Band look very smart indeed.

Most importantly, when the talented youths get together to perform, they are impressive to say the least.

Whether on the tuba, euphonium, trumpet, trombone, clarinet, saxophone, drum, cymbal, flute, piccolo or the bell instrument, each member plays his role to the best of his capabilities.

This is because despite their differences in background, race or religion, all the band's over 50 members share a passion for music.

"We love it. And when you love something, you put your heart into it," said bandleader Jeffery Chan, 17, when met at the SM St Michael school in Ipoh recently.

He said however that the band had recently been facing problems, such as the lack of new mu-sic instruments and new uniforms.

"Some of our instruments are more than 20 years old. And our uniforms are old too," he said.

Chan said many band members had to purchase their own instruments and uniforms.

"The uniforms cost close to RM300 each. And the instruments can cost up to RM6,000," he said.

To raise funds, the band will be performing in a combined concert entitled 'For Wonderful Friendship' at the SK Yuk Choy primary school in Ipoh from 8pm on June 6.

Tickets are priced at RM10 for students and RM20 for adults and the funds raised will go towards purchasing new equipment and uniforms for the band.

To purchase tickets, call Chan at 016-5308699, Andy Lai at 017-5267076 or Bryan Lee at 016-530 2260.
